MRI
MRI is an advanced diagnostic technique which uses radio pulses and a powerful electromagnet to produce extremely detailed images of the body. It can be used for any part of the body. Once a month we have an MRI scanning session at our Moulton surgery, this is provided by a mobile veterinary scanning company www.burgessdiagnostics.com
This service enables us to scan brain, spinal cord, joints, abdominal organs and bones and can help pinpoint diagnoses that would have been impossible to make with other diagnostic techniques. We can diagnose brain disease such as tumours, hydrocephalus (excess fluid), spinal cord abnormalities such as syringohydromyelia (Chiari malformation) often seen in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and intervertebral disc disease (slipped disc). Other uses are examining joint structures such as tendons or ligaments without the need to open into the joint, assessing the size and spread of tumours , even searching for foreign objects within the body- as sticks or grass seeds can often lodge in hard to reach places and rather than repeated exploratory surgery MRI can help to track them down.
