Investigative procedures may include skin scrapings, microscopy, blood tests, bacterial and fungal culture, dietary trials, biopsy (for cytology and/or histopathology) and intradermal skin testing.
Cases are seen during the week, usually between 9.30am. and 3.00pm. Initial consultations are for 60 minutes. In some circumstances sedation or anaesthesia may be needed for the investigation so patients should be starved overnight before their appointment.
A full history is essential for all dermatology cases.
For cases requiring allergy testing it is important that the patient is off medication that may interfere with the results.( see table below)
Skin disease can be extremely distressing and sometimes painful for pets and if left untreated can cause chronic irreversible changes to the skin and affect general health. In order to make sure that your pet is on the correct treatment regimen we aim to investigate their problem thoroughly before instituting treatment.
We can help with problem skin cases which have not responded to previous treatment such as allergic skin disease, anal furunculosis and chronically itchy or painful ear conditions.
There are many causes of skin disease in pets; parasites such as fleas, mange mites or even certain species of parasitic worm, allergy to food, pollens, or other environmental triggers, autoimmune disease or even inherited susceptibility to skin disease in certain breeds. Although many skin diseases can be easily diagnosed, others can be more complex and many animals with skin disease will be on long-term, often lifelong medication.
