Dentistry
Plaque and tartar can lead to severe inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis, which is a painful condition. Bacteria inside the mouth can be highly destructive and plaque causes periodontal disease where the roots of the teeth can become damaged beyond repair. Typically, periodontal disease progresses to tooth loss if not treated in time.
Unfortunately, periodontal disease can also lead to several other pet health issues. The bacteria that cause dental disease in cats and dogs are also responsible for halitosis or bad breath. Pets can even develop serious, sometimes life-threatening, illness due to the bacteria in their mouths when they have untreated dental disease, as bacteria can enter the bloodstream and spread and cause disease in major organs. Among the organs damaged by these oral bacteria are the heart, kidneys, lungs, and bladder.
We advise on oral hygiene to help you maintain your pet’s oral health in the best possible condition. A combination of products such as toothbrushes, paste, mouthwashes, specialised chews and diets can be used depending on the individual pet. Our nurses can show you how to institute regular tooth brushing regimes during a nurse consult, contact any of our surgeries for an appointment.
Scaling and polishing may be necessary at intervals throughout a dog or cat’s life and when this is undertaken it requires general anaesthesia.
We are fully equipped at all 3 sites with high speed dental machinery, sonic/ultrasonic scalers and dental instruments enabling us to care for your pet’s teeth throughout their life, this includes the specialist instrumentation required for attending to the needs of rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. We also have the facilities to undertake some endodontic work.
